Meridian Bank Receives ECB Banking Licence and Announces European Market Entry
Meridian Bank has received its European Central Bank banking licence and confirmed plans to enter six new European markets beginning with Germany and France in Q2 2026.
Meridian Bank today confirmed receipt of its European Central Bank (ECB) banking licence, authorising the challenger bank to accept deposits and offer lending products across all 20 eurozone member states.
The bank will launch first in Germany and France in Q2 2026, followed by Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, and Belgium in H2 2026. Its product suite will include current accounts, savings accounts, personal loans, and business banking for sole traders and SMEs.
“Receiving the ECB licence is a milestone that took three years to achieve,” said Meridian Bank co-founder and CEO Anika Svensson. “We are now positioned to challenge incumbents across the entire eurozone with a banking experience built for mobile-first customers.”
Meridian’s app, currently available in the UK with 650,000 active users, will be relaunched with a new eurozone onboarding flow in January 2026.
